Magnificent creature. Only girls and horses are described this way. What if a girl was a creature in both senses, female and something else? What if there was a reason for people to find her different though they didn't know why? Grace is such a creature. She's elegant and utterly peculiar. All first daughters of her mother's family have been for generation upon generation and all that keeps them is a token from one who loves them and who they care for. A bargain brokered over a rose. She isn't alone in the world it certainly feels that way. Only after Grace goes to look for her missing father does she realize that hers is not the only story of isolation and woe.
